Adventures in Camera Selection

Up to this point my entire collection of photographs has been taken by cell phones with lenses of similar quality to potatoes. They work well for posting to social media, but only just barely. I want to share my experiences traveling with all my friends and family. Seeing as most of them won't be able to travel with me makes high quality photography much more important.

I've come to realize that when I'm mucking around with a camera, I'm missing out on experiencing the world around me. I want to have awesome photos, but I want it to be a painless process where I can quickly snap a photo and then get back to enjoying the environment. I don't want to mess with multiple lenses or adding a lot of bulk to my gear.

After doing a lot of research on blogs and sub-reddits I decided to get a Sony RX100. It's small, takes great pictures, and has a ton of features. The only down-size might be it's battery life. The manual says it can take ~330 pictures on a single charge with standard settings. Luckily I already have a couple of USB charge packs laying around. We bought them to power el-wire lights at Burning Man, and realized they worked amazingly well at keeping cell phones and other small electronics charged anytime we are away from home.

Here's a couple of test shots I took around Seattle including Seattle's famous rain, and a shot with a yellow-only filter. Let me know what you think!
